There was no Target run. No matching bins. No mini fridge, no debate over lofting the bed, no "see you at family weekend." My son didn't move into a dorm this fall. He moved into our kitchen calendar.
Not exactly the send-off any of us pictured.
We'd been planning for the dorm experience for months — the independence, the practice at being a grown-up in a smaller, safer container before the real world showed up. He wanted it too. He was ready to want it, at least. But it didn't happen, and when your kid has autism, "it didn't happen the way we planned" doesn't land like a scheduling hiccup. It lands like the floor moved.
There was disappointment. There was a very real stretch where nobody in this house was okay, including me. I took time off work just in case. I hovered. I did the thing where you say "we'll figure it out" in a voice that sounds calm and isn't.
And then, because apparently that's just who I am now, I made a sign-up sheet.
If you've read this blog for more than five minutes, you already know: my love language is a laminated schedule nobody asked for.
Nothing fancy. A shared schedule where everyone who could help with the commute — me, my husband, his sister — put their name next to the days they could drive. Everyone picked their own part. Nobody got handed the whole thing. My son could see it, plan around it, and stop carrying the weight of "what if nobody's available."
One week in, here's what I can tell you: it is not perfect. Somebody forgot a Tuesday. We're still adjusting pickup times. But nobody is angry, everybody is showing up, and my son has stopped asking "what if" every morning — because the answer is already sitting on the fridge in marker.
That's the whole trick, honestly. Simplify the decision down to "who's driving." Structure it so everyone can see their piece. Let the system carry what used to live in my head at 11pm. Simplify → Structure → Sustain, whether the crisis is chore-chart-sized or life-plan-sized.
I don't know yet if this becomes an actual product in the shop — a real commuter sign-up sheet other families could adapt for carpools, therapy runs, whatever their version of "getting someone somewhere" looks like. I'm genuinely asking: would that help your house? Tell me in the comments. I've been wrong about what people want before (RIP the printable nobody bought — we don't talk about it), so I'd rather ask than guess.
For now, if your family is white-knuckling a plan that didn't go the way you hoped: you don't have to fix the whole future tonight. You just have to figure out who's driving on Tuesday.
